Learning English in early childhood – Article in the newspaper Proto Thema

It has been scientifically proven that exposing a child to a foreign language at a very young age leads to higher levels of intelligence – What does Fenia Chranioti, the founder of  “CHRANIOTI language centers”

The question of the appropriate age for a child to start learning the English language is increasingly of concern to contemporary parents.

It has been scientifically proven that exposing a child to a foreign language at a very young age leads to higher levels of intelligence. Generally, bilingual children show greater cognitive flexibility and greater linguistic and meta-linguistic awareness.

According to the “critical age” hypothesis the person at a young age can develop the language at the level of a native speaker. After the completion of this period, the brain loses its plasticity and thus the learning of any language is more difficult (Critical Hypothesis, Lenneberg). According to Turtain & Pesola “there is a correlation between the time spent learning a language and the proficiency the learner acquires”.

Learning the English language at a young age contributes decisively to the development of children’s creativity as it broadens their intellectual horizons and develops a variety of social skills.

In modern Educational Centers, we therefore have to take advantage of children’s innate curiosity for new things and their excellent assimilative capacity in managing knowledge. The learning process works naturally, intuitively, in the patterns that the child has already developed, as they develop in their mother tongue. Thus, young students acquire authentic pronunciation as they render the words as faithfully as possible to the original hearing they receive.

At the core of our educational approach lies the freedom and creativity of children. Our educational programme is based on children’s interests. The digital age, robotics and new technologies contribute significantly to the formation of an authentic educational environment and with the parallel integration of theatre, the arts, role-playing as well as music-kinetic and psycho-motor education activities, our educational goals are achieved.

In Foreign Language Education Centers, children develop self-confidence as well as social and cognitive skills that will be particularly useful in their later life. At the same time, they cultivate sensory integration and movement skills.

Consequently, learning the English language develops into a very pleasant experience creating a positive emotional bond with the language. Thus, the chances of a child becoming bilingual increase, which is particularly important for the later course of their life as there are many cognitive, linguistic, communicative and cultural advantages.

Therefore, “The sooner, the better! Because what we learn with pleasure, we never forget!!!”
